@Nyx (Aya) ( your thread is here, just so you know where it is. I'll think of a mission)
Avatar
Nyx awakens in their small apartment in Central, on the UNW's planet of Gudrun. The wall compad begins to vibrate gently with an incoming message. Outside the rain is slowly falling though the sun is peaking through letting you know the storm is moving off. The thunder of children's; feet down the hallway lets you knwo that they've also noticed and are heading out to play , giving you peace and quiet to take this call.
Avatar
Nyx reluctantly rolls out of bed to take the call.
Avatar
The voice on the other end of the line is the United Nations of Worlds recruiting office, with an offer from the intelligence divison of affairs. They assure you this is a secured line, and that a job offer is going to follow in a few seconds. There is a tri tone beep followed by a large amount of static through the line before it eventually stabilizes, and a machine like voice advises you that you've been selected for an important mission to the south of the polity, beyond its borders to a planet w here the locals are having trouble with armed and technologically superior tribes. On Kuhuk , the Remnant used to control a shipyard and forced the natives to mine minerals, radioactives ,and other sources of wealth to be shipped into the shipuard that once occupied the system. THe shipyard is gone now, but the wrecks of several large ships made their way down to the planet, and these wrecks have become hives for the southenr tribes. These tribes raided and looted the armories and lockers aboard the vessels, along with the cargo bays and now have modern weapons, small numbers of vehicles, and several other advantages over the northern tribes who have regressed into Dark Ages technology with the occasional gun or steam powered device. The UNW would like the leaders of these southern tribes eliminated. The northern tribes are sympathetic, and another UNW agent is working with them to garner goodwill. Nothing the polity does will remain intact and stable if these southern tribe maraud north like expected. With the removal of their leaders, the tribes will infight, and this will allow time for more strength to be brought to bear.
Avatar
Nyx responds, "Yea, I'll do it. Do you have any further intel on the leaders and do you have transportation arranged? Also, I'll need some equipment."
Avatar
"We have transportation arranged to bring you there. THe locals will help you get close to the bandit settlements, but they're just going to serve as your guides and they can fill you in on your questions. We don't have any equipment to offer you. You're a specialist based on your files here, you'll find a way to get this done."
10:08 AM
(If you have your own credits to spend and want to pick something up you can, but the UNW will not issue equipment beyond starting gear and whatever else you can purchase for a first mission)
Avatar
"Where do I meet the transport?", Nyx asks.
Avatar
"The shuttle that will bring you to the destination planet will be meeting you this evening at the Central air/space port. The gate guards will be looking for you and once you show ID you'll be permitted through with any weapons or other gear you need. The ship crew will help you get aquainted and will handle things from there. They'll be the only shuttle there tonight, so you won't miss them"
Avatar
"Got it," Nyx responds. She then flicks the comm panel off, clicks her tounge, and thinks, Tch, they're all the same...about worthless. **** Nyx then waits until evening, grabs one last bite of food, and heads out the door with her stuff for the central port.
Avatar
The city of Central is the first place humans settled on Gudrun in the wake of The Scream, and while they have since founded several more smaller settlements, Central continues to be the main locus of human activity on this planet. Its planetside starport is modern, and there are a number of passenger equipped cargo lighters coming and going as people descend from the orbital platform above, or fly in directly from other cities on the surface. Your shuttle stands out as being the only vessel of its type there. It is painted a matte black and the crew are completing pre-flight checks as you arrive.
Avatar
Nyx walks up to either anyone looking like security or to anyone who looks important of the crew and shows her ID.
Avatar
"Agent Nyx. Welcome aboard. The shuttle doesn't have a name" the crew chief says "Just a tail number. Not important for your invovlement in all this anyway. We've got a long trip ahead of us, we'll be in UNW territory for most of it, so we'll make good time on our way to the destination. We'll need to spend four days in the target system refueling since we won't have access to a service depot there, and we'd like to do that before you set foot on the surface in the event we need to get you out quickly"
Avatar
“Sounds good,” Nyx replies. Nyx then boards the shuttle, finds some space, and begins studying material on piloting for the duration. (Intention is to start working on gaining pilot level 0 during the down time) (Edit: Changed the intended skill learning during down time) Edit: (This sounds like a fuel scooping refuel. If so, please kindly disregard my intent to “train” a skill during that time.) (edited)
Avatar
(We are in polity space for 10 days as we head south. There won’t be scooping in polity space since we have ship service depots there)
12:37 PM
(When we get to our destination they’ll need to spend four days scooping for the return trip, and you wouldn’t get an additional four days during that time)
Avatar
(Ok, 10 days of pilot skill training then. The other 4 nothing.)
11:18 AM
(this is what we know of the world so far. There is a UNW agent with the Soroth tribe right now, but they're doing things like digging wells and stuff)
11:19 AM
(the crashed ship is midway down the eastern coast of the large inland ocean)
11:21 AM
There is no orbital infrastructure in the system, and there is no one on the ground with comms to reach you from space. Contact with the locals is not necessary as part of the job, but not discouraged either. The UNW is allowing latitude with how the mission is being carried out. The crew is waiting as you review the map of the planet, waiting to see where you'd like to be set down.
Avatar
“Set me down near the northern settlement. The outskirts of the Soroth Tribe,” Nyx responds.
Avatar
The ramshackle port city is to your west as the shuttle sets down, 3km outside the city which is where the previous UNW diplomatic group set down. There are no locals here, since it is a dust bowl ,and far from the support facilities of their city on foot through this rocky and sandy terrain. There is a small green belt to the northeast and to the north, but there are no signs of hunting parties or others out there.
Avatar
Nyx grabs her stuff and heads west towards the port city.
Avatar
You approach the port to see a tour of its walls and defenses happening. You recognize another UNW agent there but it looks as though they're too involved in what they're doing right now to have the time to speak with you. (another player is doing a mission here, but since this is your first one and they've got their own plans we're not going to have the streams cross for now) The village looks to be putting work into strengthening its scrap wall defenses, mining stone and dragging it into place. Others are mixing mortar from the sand and rock nearby, crushing it and stirring it into a slurry that will harden into a binding agent to keep the rock together. This rock loosk like it is going to be the outer skin of the walls and towers here, and even with a large amount of manpower, this is a project that will take months, if not years to fully complete. Any raids that are coming will happen before that time.
Avatar
Arriving at the settlement, Nyx looks around for what appears to be some sort of central administrative building, hoping to find the settlement leader and/or someone in charge of security. (Intent is that Nyx will do a combination of looking around and asking for directions to find her way to either the main government building.)

With other off worlders here and helping ,you're not afforded the level of suspicious or non-cooperation you might have expected from the locals, and are given directions to the government building. The building is more of a pair of longhouses built on top of one another, with broad stairs leading to the second level from the street. There is a large fire built in the town square that seems to be the focal point and meeting place for most of the people here that need to avail themselves of the town's elected leaders, consisting of a chief, a law speaker, the medicine man, and the chief warrior.
Avatar
Nyx walks to the large fire area and both patiently and quietly waits their turn to be acknowledged.
Avatar
The chief waves you forward after about ten minutes of talking to others. The lawspeaker takes one of those aforementioned in line back to a part of the residence for a consultation not suited for public ears. "Another offworlder. Where are you from?" he asks, inviting you to sit on the large log next to him. The warmth of the fire is pleasant, and not overwhelming this time of day.
Avatar
Nyx sits on the log next to the chief per his invitation. “My name is Nyx. I come from Gudrun. I am here to help with the problem of the southern tribes. I was told that you could help me with a guide or two to get close to their settlement,” Nyx responded. “Also, I could use some clothing that would match the southern tribes clothing, if you have some available, and I could use the names of the leaders and a brief description of what they look like, if you don’t mind,” Nyx added.
Avatar
“They’ve got the contents of the ship armories. You’re actually close to what they’re wearing already. I can give you descriptions of the people we knew were in charge last. Are you also from the unw. I think that’s one of their worlds?”
Avatar
“Yes, I’m also from the UNW,” Nyx replies. “I would love whatever information you have on those who were last in charge and any other information you think is relevant,” Nyx adds.
Avatar
"We don't know much. The Remnant lost several ships here during the waning days of their rule. Gravity did what gravity does and the wrecks are scattered scross the southern hemisphere of the planet. The tribes there have armed themselves accordingly, and our scouts have told us some of those tribes might have managed to get some vehicles running too, We don't have any of those advantages. If they come here ,they will take the city. They will win. We don't want that to happen as you can imagine. What kind of innformation to do you want? They're thousands of miles away, too far to contact them regularly by foot ,even in better days. We admittedly dont' know much" (edited)
Avatar
"Do you know the names of the leaders? How many leaders there are for the southern tribes? If you are unable to help with either of those, do you perhaps know how to identify a leader of the southern tribes? Do they have any identifying marks or clothing? Also, would you happen to know approximate locations of where they are at or where their cities are?" Nyx asks. "If you can't help with any of that, could you lend me a guide who knows the southern tribes?" Nyx proposes. Edit: (Sorry, I asked a lot of questions there. Not trying to inundate you or the chief, just getting them out there. If he truly knows nothing, I'll hope he can provide a guide per my briefing. Otherwise I'll adapt and overcome somehow.) (edited)
Avatar
(Yeah, I don’t have any of that laid out. You’ll have to adapt, this is a first mission and while the chief might know it, most of this is not important for a simple first mission) (edited)
7:26 PM
(I need to remind you I’m not a military expert so while in your field those are all probably good questions that would be critical for doing a thing, that’s just beyond what I’m able to do)
Avatar
(Before I put my next narrative in there, did the shuttle take off after Nyx departed for the village? Or did it remain on the ground? If it took off, I believe you mentioned it would be out of communications range in orbit?)
Avatar
(It lifted off, but I never said it would be out of range. We've scooped fuel ahead of time, so they're in orbit waiting for the mission to be over to get you. They can also drop you off closer to a destination on the planet's surface- but they won't hot extract you or anything, they won't risk the ship)
Avatar
(Thank you, Neko, I appreciate the clarification). "On second thought, disregard. Aparently my briefing was incorrect. I'll deal with that later. For the present, it doesn't seem as though I'll get what I was looking for here. Nonetheless, thank you for your time," Nyx adds before the Chief can speak. Nyx then departs, calls the shuttle to pick her up at the drop off location, and begins heading in that direction.
Avatar
(heading in the direction of the shipwrecks?)
Avatar
(yes and no. "no" = nyx is currently heading to meet the shuttle/ship where she was dropped off. once she is picked up, then "yes" = intent will be to have the shuttle/ship drop her off close to the shipwrecks.)
Avatar
(okay thats what i eneeded to know, so I know what to write) The shuttle picks you up just outside the city, close to where you had been dropped off. The shuttle is not willing to get closer than ten kilometers to the wrecks, trying to stay outside the range of any defenses the southern tribes may have been able to get active again. The land here is rocky and rolling dunes , with the occasional scrub tree or thorny shrub.
Avatar
Not knowing exactly what to expect between a mix of high and low tech defenses, as well as not knowing if the southern tribes will be immediately hostile or not, Nyx sets off at a slower pace towards the crashed ships; wary of any scouts, sensors, and/or traps along the way. Nyx hopes that she'll find a good overlook spot where she can do some visual observation of the target area before approaching too close. (Intent: want to proceed slow and careful, don't want to become exhausted and want to watch out for "gotchas". Trying to find a spot to observe the crashed ships that is close, but not too close (she doesn't have binocs). She would like to "get a feel for the area and formulate a plan based on what she sees"...when/if we get to that point.)

(sounds good, you won't be detected up to 500m from the ship. I'm sort of getting my wits back today so I 'll get you a more detailed workup tomorrow )
Avatar
The ship has turned slightly on its side, digging a furrow into the ground with its prow akin to digging its own grave as it's crashed into the ground. The spine of the ship has several watchtowers and observation posts on it barnacled on top of the hull. Stakes have been laid out 100m from the hull in a circle, indicating places where walls or other defenses might be built someday ,but work has not started on them yet. A patrol of two buggies, off road vehicles with a driver and passenger in a sealed front compartment, and a gunner on a machine gun in the bed pass clockwise just outside of the staked area on a patrol. They kick up small rooster tails of dust behind them. You cannot see from here if the watchtowers have people in them, or what those people might be using for optics or weapons (edited)
Avatar
From her hiding spot, Nyx continues to watch the patrol pattern of the buggies. She tries to see if there is a pattern to their path and timing. Nyx also tries to see if there are any blind spots from the watchtowers that she might be able to exploit later on or if there is a concealment spot close by their perimeter where should could start her ingress from once there is an opening in the patrols. Edit: (I'll try to keep it as simple as I can) (edited)

Avatar
The buggies complete a pass of the vessel every five minutes on average. There is a blind spot in the observation platforms on the bow side of the ship where a spar of wreckage makes something resembling a dorsal fin, and the observation posts cannot see the direct front of the ship over the spike of twisted metal from where the ships prow was twisted upward on impact with the ground
Avatar
Nyx looks for any openings in the area of the blindspot. (Can Nyx see any way into the wreckage in the blindspot area...from her current position?)
Avatar
There is an opening you’d be able to get into but it would require a sprint , and then a climb up several jutting metal spars to a compartment the crash opened to the outside air
Avatar
Nyx makes her way to the blind spot area, being careful to remain hidden from the patroling buggies. Once there is an opening in the patrol, she sprints and tries to make the climb up the metal spars to the compartment.

Hand over hand you haul yourself up the spars of metal in a feat of incredible personal strength. The compartment is open to the sky but there is an unpowered iris hatch that leads to the inside of the shipwreck turned settlement
Avatar
Nyx examines the iris hatch to see if there is a way to fix it, jury rig it, and/or force it open.
Avatar
The hatch is not broken but does not have power coming from the reactor at the ship's heart anymore. The metal is thin, serving in place of a normal entry door on a ground based home. It is meant to be more of a privacy barrier than reinforced bulkhead.
Avatar
Nyx looks around for something to help her pry the door open, preferably quietly. (I'm still wrapping my head around the technology of the game. From what you wrote, it sounds as though the door only responds to power, period. So there are no "hydraulic back ups" so a person might find a hydraulic emergency release valve in the paneling by the door. Therefore, intent is to find something she can use to help pry the door open, without making too much noise, rather than just ripping through things.)
Avatar
(you could force it open somehow, There's no backup on this side of the door. )
Avatar
Nyx uses whatever she can find to force the door open, preferably quietly if at all possible.

(We are at the southern cabin on the right, next to the airlock.) The door opens to a dark hallway. You see no one in the main hallway for the moment but suspect it will not be this way for long.
Avatar
(I have a quick question. If it's PAFO, that's cool...but I gotta ask. I need clarification. When people talk about the "southern tribes", their base, and their leaders...are they all sharing this one crashed ship as a base? Or are there numerous bases scattered around? I've been getting mixed signals on it.)
Avatar
(Pafo. This is one place we know they’re gathering. We don’t know if there’s others )

(No one’s done that leg work. This is a first mission so this ship/ area is all I was really planning on having you do as a first mission) (edited)
Avatar
(No problem at all. I love PAFO. I got the answer I needed to make me feel better about "Plan A" for this scenario.) Nyx looks around to see if there's some kind of vent system she could open and squeeze into before she decides to do the old fashioned way and stealthily head down the corridor to the first intersection and turn left to go through the doors there. (Intention is to see if there's a vent system she could use to be "stealthy" versus just walking down the corridor...but if there isn't, she'll go to the first intersection, turn left, and go through the doors in the cargo hold.) (Edit: Fixed a grammar issue and the wild paragraph spacing) (edited)
Avatar
There is a grate in the ceiling that looks roughly man sized, held on with two rusting screws keeping the frame held to the ceiling. They look like they will be easy to manipulate.

Spying the vent in the ceiling, Nyx attempts to open it and pull herself up into it...shutting it behind her.

Nyx is able to pocket each screw and the grate is caught as it falls from its housing before hitting the floor and you are able to catch it. With as much effort as you can manage, you pull yourself vertically up into the dark vent. It runs down the hallway from what you can tell, passing over the other cabins and an area you think is a common area or crew lounge at the end.
Avatar
Nyx moves up a little ways to see if the vent branches to the left at the intersection of the corridors. (Hmmm, i wonder if i got myself into a bit of a deadend. does it turn left at all...maybe towards the cargo/eng area?).
Avatar
At the second cabin ,the vent branches south toward the cargo area. It does not look like you can reach the engineering space from this duct.
Avatar
Nyx takes the branch to the south and tries to see what she can see/hear anything going on. (Intent is to see is Nyx can gain any intel ... meaning seeing or hearing anything ... as she progresses through the vent system to the south...especially in the cargo area. This may have been a bad idea on my part. Probably over-thinking things again.)
Avatar
heading toward the southern branch there is a brief conversation being had between two of the bandits. You're not sure what their respective positions would be within the tribal hierarchy but it sounds like each have a moderate level of information and responsibility. The ship forges are working again, and ammunition foundries are going to be started in the morning.
Avatar
(Does Nyx know if the conversation took place in a hallway, in that room to the south, or in the cargo area? It's not important other than to know where she is right now in the vents before I post her next move.)
Avatar
(It is taking place within the cargo area)
Avatar
Nyx looks for a good exit from the vent system, waits for the area to be clear, and then exits quietly...looking for concealment as she does. (Intent is to exit the vent system in the cargo area when the coast is clear...if it becomes clear. After exiting, she'll look for cover and evaluate her next move.)
Avatar
(We could get out in the cargo hold, either of the three cabins in the south side, or the south lounge. Any of those places would clear after a while but things might be differnt in terms of whats around depending on where you decide to pop out, so I need to know that)
Avatar
(As I said in my intent, in the cargo area)
Avatar
Looking down from the vent you see the cargo bay is empty now. The people speaking have moved off to their other tasks and the cavernous bay is dark and quiet. There is room for much more cargo here than what is being currently stored. Clothing, power cells, and survival equipment is inventoried here. The vent lid quietly pops off and you are able to drop the short 1m drop to the top of a tarped section of crates with solar rechargers in them.
Avatar
(Not sure is this is doable...or if so, if it's practical...but would Nyx be able to rummage around to see if there are any explosives kept here? Or is the area a bit too large?)

Explosives aren’t being kept in this less secure storage room. Neither are weapons or anything that might pass as armor. You find loose hand tools, power cells, and survival equipment in this storage room but little else.
Avatar
Nyx thinks to herself, Yea, didn't think so. That's about par for the course for this mission. They'd most likely be in the armory. I don't really want to trapse all over the ship, though, so hopefully the tools and power cells will come in handy. Nyx grabs a few power cells and an assortment of hand tools and puts them in her pack for possible use later. Afterwards, Nyx makes her way to the engine room door and prepares to enter. In preparation, she tries to see if she can hear any voices in the room before she readies her weapon and opens the door. (So, at the risk of putting too much in this...the intention is to grab some cells and some tools {she has the fix skill, so she may know the "standard tools" she'd need} in order to possibly rig a bomb and/or equipment she finds in engine room or the ammo manufacturing room. Just trying to think a little bit ahead here. Next, prior to making entry in into the engine room, intent is due diligence to try to see if it's clear. I have no idea if she'd even be able to hear anything through a starship door or not...but, just in case...just being cautious.)
Avatar
(I think you;d be able to rig up a small explosive charge with what' shere. I think they'd be grenade scale as opposed to demolition charge scale though given Type A cells don't have a large amount of energy in them)
Avatar
(I'll take them nonetheless. Since I got screwed on the money roll and only had enough for a gun, some ammo, commpad, and a backpack, which is less than the regular starting equipment, ... and have literally $0 money to get anything else {like armor, med kit, explosives, etc} ... I'll take what I can get. I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.) EDIT: Added a comma. (edited)
Avatar
There are several voices on the other side of the door. You can hear the tribal folks in this room shouting to one another as power levels are regulated. THough the engines are dead, the reactor is working and provides electrical power to the rest of the ship and its inhabitants. You also hear the stomp of booted feet on the deck inside as a patrol sounds like it passing through the reactor room toward the door.
Avatar
(Does Nyx have enough time to get back into the vent system? Doesnt seem like she does...) (edited)
Avatar
(not into the vents no, not with how close the patrol is. There are other places to try to hide though if that's the plan)

Avatar
You are able to squeeze through the vent's thinning and shrinking slightly as it traverses the bulkhead separating where you were from engineering. There are no vents to look through in the immediate section of the thin metal vent, but you can hear the sound of machinery and a few shouting voices of the work crew keeping the reactor of the ship running and keeping power distrubuting to the places it is needed .
Avatar
(Neko, I will take the hit on this one since I was out a week due to my intensive and being super sick the past few days. I need to clarify the situation before I go forward because I'm a little confused. When last we left Nyx, she was in the cargo hold, hiding next to the reactor room door...having just eluded a patrol. In the description, you mentioned that, thru the door, i could hear people keeping the ractor levels up that were powering the ship. In my last post, after the patrol passed, I was intending to make a U-turn and try to make my way to the engineering room...where you described it as hearing some people keeping the reactor levels up that were powering the ship. I would like to confirm that we are now at engineering and not the reactor room...since I think I got the same description for each...and which are on opposite sides of the ship. EDIT: Edited for further clarity...just added a few words in the middle.) (edited)
Avatar
(We are now in engineering after going through the vent. Power goes from the reactor room to engineering, and there are also people working here. We don't know what else engineering is up to since we can't see into the room) (edited)

(Can Nyx use the hand tools she swiped to rig a couple of the power cells to explode? Not an immediate explosion, but a delayed one that might give her a few mins? If so, she would like to do that...the plan would be to rig them, possibly put them back into the crate where they came from, and work her way back to the engineering room through the vents. Thinking maybe they can be used as a distraction. If this is possible, I'll throw in a write-up for it.)

She then throws them back into the crate where she got them and makes her way back to the engineering section, through the vents, and waits to see if they create enough of a distraction to pull people from the engineering room. You start to think that maybe the impromptu charge was rigged up incorrectly before there is a pop and then a much larger blast from a distant section of the ship. The vents rattle and shake and several rivets pop from the ceiling, weakening it. You think with enough momentum you can get it to collapse for easy access to engineering. Alarms start to go off, and you can hear shouting voices slowly leaving the room below.

Nyx waits until she thinks she hears the last person leave and then enters the room.

(How are you entering it? You're in the vents. Are you trying to make the vents like crash down to the floor? backtrack and try to find another way in? Ect)

(Hmmm, backtrack and find another way in. Need me to re-write my last action?)

(no that is fine) It takes fifteen minutes to quietly sneak youe way back into the room. You see that this room is similar to the reactor room because it still deals with power in some way, and specifically for distributing power, water, and climate control to the other areas of this crashed ship that has become a city. There are no technicians here now, and the consoles are running on their own, not needing to be constantly tended. The room is swelteringly hot with all the electronics running.

Nyx takes a look at the consoles to see if she could weaponize the reactor system in some way to blow the place. (With her fix skill, does it look like she would be able to rig a "reactor melt down", or something to that effect, which would blow the entire ship area? And would she be able to rig it in a way that they would be unable to stop it?).

(what is your current fix level? )

(I think wh at's being asked is beyond something a Fix 1 can do without rolling a skill check)

(Ok, I will do a skill check. Edit: Fix / Int?) (edited)

A meltdown could be accomplished from here , and you think you can change enough and tamper with enough to make the process something the locals can't reverse. You're unsure how much time you will have to escape , and you're unsure how long it will take to blow. It's unclear what the locals will do once the sabotage is discovered.
